Hi, fashionable beauties! Today I am going to discuss how to ensure you select the right outfits for your style blog. I know, you are thinking that any outfit should be fine, right? Well, it depends. Remember that style blogging is a business so you need to be strategic about everything you post-- including the outfits you showcase. I am referring specifically to blog posts that include Ads and/or Affiliate links. I won't go into details about Ads now because when you have a paid promo, there are guidelines that a brand specifies for you to follow. I'll go into more details about paid promos in a future post.
What are affiliate links? Basically, affiliate links are one of the ways you get paid to be a style blogger. It is a hyperlink that is unique to you that you include in your blog post and it links directly to the product you are advertising. Depending on the type of affiliation program, you may get paid when a visitor to your blog clicks on the link, when they purchase the product, or if they purchase any other product attached to that link.
So, back to selecting the right outfits. When you are planning the outfits you want to post on your blog, you need to ensure that (1) you choose items that can be purchased online, (2) select outfits that are currently being sold, (3) select items that you can make a commission on, and (4) make sure you select clothing that speaks to your personal brand and style.
SELECT OUTFITS THAT CAN BE PURCHASED ONLINE
One of the first mistakes I made as a style blogger was buying a graphic tee shirt in-store at Old Navy, only to find out it was only sold in stores and not online. To make matters worse, I didn't find out until after I already had my photoshoot. If an item is not sold online then you cannot connect your affiliate link to it. Which means you won't make any money! If you are buying something in a store, go online on your phone and check to make sure that same item is available for purchase on the store's website! There are affiliate links for discounts on purchases and shipping, those are different because they are not linked to a specific item. However, for an outfit you want to be very aware of whether to not it is sold online.
CONSIDER THE SEASONS AND FOCUS ON NEW ITEMS
Focus on clothing that is new and currently being sold. Clothing brands are always getting new items. If you purchase an item towards the end of its cycle it may no longer be for sale (online or in-store) by the time you post it. This can be a little tricky which is why you need to take the time to get to know the brands you want to work with. I have noticed that the more popular items tend to be available longer. Clothing items that are not so popular end up on the clearance rack pretty quickly. Also consider the season-- if you purchase a pair of boots towards the end of the Winter season, you will be at the cusp of when stores are changing their inventory to Spring/Summer fashion and the boots may no longer be available for sale (or at least not for long). The goal is to purchase clothing items that are new, popular, and items that have a high inventory. If a dress is popular, the brand will keep restocking it!
MAKE SURE YOU CAN MAKE A COMMISSION
I have a slogan when it comes to style blogging: "Don't wear anything you don't get paid for!" Remember, this is a business. Yes, you will have blog posts that don't include affiliate links where you are just sharing style tips-- and that is fine. But even in that case, you should be linking to "Similar Items" that you have affiliate links for. Linking to "Similar" items is when you share something that may no longer be available online (for example, if it is from last season) but you link it to a clothing item that looks similar. The point is that you want to maximize the profitability of your blog. You also want to make sure that you are affiliated with the brand you are showcasing. Make sure you have an account with the brand so that you can generate affiliate links and get commissions.
WEAR CLOTHING THAT COMPLIMENTS YOUR STYLE BRAND
Every style blogger has a style focus. For example, maybe you focus on high end luxury brands, maybe you show people how to dress fashionable on a budget, or how to to mix high/low fashion. Whatever you style theme is, make sure the outfits you wear and showcase match that theme.
